Endowment Giving

The establishment of endowment funds in honor or memory of a loved one creates a lasting legacy of support for a wide range of school priorities. Contributions to and investment proceeds from endowment funds provide a permanent source of income to support merit scholarships, tuition assistance, faculty excellence, and many other initiatives. Additionally, the endowment ensures the long-term sustainability of St. Paul’s and allows our schools to continuously enhance and evolve educational offerings and the student experience.

On April 23, the entire St. Paul’s community came together for a special Earth Day chapel service to reflect on how a connected community can care for the world around us. During the service, Lower School Science Teacher James Wallace was honored with the 2026 Cathy McAuliffe Environmental Leadership Award for his leadership, advocacy, and care for our campus environment. Named for longtime staff member Cathy McAuliffe, the McAuliffe Award recognizes outstanding contributions by a St. Paul’s student, teacher, staff member, or group that promote a more environmentally sustainable campus and planet.

During St. Paul’s annual Walter S. Smith Awards presentations, the St. Paul’s community was joined by Jon Price ’74, whose family helped establish the awards. Jon shared personal reflections about his father’s dear friend and the namesake of the awards, Walter S. Smith, a classmate of James Price IV ’42 at the Virginia Military Institute. The Smith Awards were established by Mr. Price, in partnership with the Smith family, as a way to honor Walter Smith, who fought during World War II and was killed in battle.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s Smith Award recipients are Houston A. ’34, Blake L. ’30, and Beckett B. ’26, who were selected for their selflessness, service, and concern for others.

With great joy we share that Middle School Science Teacher Barry James was named the recipient of St. Paul’s 2026 Bower Grant in April. This grant is made possible by the generosity of donors in our community who established the Eric Bower Memorial Fund to support experiential learning opportunities for middle school faculty at St. Paul’s School for Boys.
